At Doctors’ Choice Physical Medicine and Rehab, we offer massage by licensed massage therapists.
What are the benefits of Massage Therapy?
The following lists many of the benefits of Massage Therapy:
Releases tight and sore muscles which can cause Ischemia: (Ischemia: A lack of blood supply to soft tissues, which causes hypersensitivity to the touch and allows for further injury to the tissues)- Helps relieve nerve compression or entrapment: (Pressure on a nerve by soft tissue, cartilage, or bone, which can contribute to muscle atrophy, referred pain, tingling and numbness, and conditions such as pseudo sciatica, Piriformis syndrome, pseudo angina, and others.)
- Deactivates Myofascial Trigger Points: (Trigger Points: Areas of high neurological activity, which refer pain to other parts of the body. Research has shown trigger points may be responsible for as much as 74% of everyday pain.)
- Decreases Pain and Inflammation: Massage can restore suppleness and strength to your muscles’ function. It is the ideal treatment for releasing tension or muscles in spasm and helps to release toxins such as lactic acid during exercise).
- Alleviates Stress and Improves Circulation: Proper circulation is vital to continued health. Your blood and lymph carry nourishment to the trillions of cells throughout your body and then carry away the waste to be eliminated from the cells.
- Increases Flexibility and Range Of Motion: By reducing the tension in tight muscles, it allows for restoration of normal ranges of motion. Massage can also reduce the forces to joint capsules and diminishes the potential for joint and disc degeneration.
- Calms the Nervous System: The first sense to develop is your sense of touch. Even a simple touch lowers blood pressure and reduces the heart rate. Touch can also signal the brain to produce endorphins, your body’s natural pain suppressors. Stress can affect the ability of the nervous system to do its job. The many nerve endings found in the skin and muscles are soothed by massage, and this contributes to keeping your internal lines of communication open and operational.
- Improves Posture And Coordination
If you are calling to schedule only a massage and not requesting an appointment with the doctor, please tell the receptionist of your intent.
If you are calling for an examination for a problem to determine if a massage is “medically necessary”, please let the receptionist know. Your visit will entail evaluation by the doctor.
If you already have a prescription for a massage, please let the receptionist know that you already have a massage prescription, you may still need an evaluation at our office by the doctor and become a patient to meet your health insurance policy requirements for coverage.
What is the difference between a Medical Massage and a Non-Medical Massage?
The massage techniques may be exactly the same however; your health insurance company may cover the Medical Massage. A Non-Medical Massage is not covered under a health insurance policy.
For the massage to be covered by your insurance you need a prescription from a doctor. The doctor may be your family doctor, a chiropractic physician, orthopedic or neurological specialist. We have a chiropractic physician on staff that may be able to write your prescription if you do not have one. Your health insurance policy dictates coverage ability.
Car insurance and workers compensation covers Medical Massage.
Another difference is that a Medical Massage is specifically directed to resolve diagnosed conditions. The Medical Massage will focus only on the areas of the body related to the diagnosis and prescription. Your co-pay and detectable will apply.
A massage therapist performs a Non-Medical massage but a doctor’s prescription is not necessary. Since you are paying cash for the treatment the type of massage, area of massage, and goal of the massage is between you and the massage therapist.
Why Is a Prescription Necessary to Perform Medical Massage?
It is the law. It is beyond the Massage Therapists’ scope of practice to diagnose. They must work from a doctor’s prescription and in most cases under a doctor’s on site direct supervision to treat a specific condition.
What Types of Massage Therapy are Medical Massages?
All forms of Massage Therapy can be therapeutic when applied by a skillful and knowledgeable Massage Therapist. Medical Massage is not limited to any particular specific technique.
We incorporate several approaches in our Medical Massage including, but not limited to, Neuromuscular Therapy, Myofascial Release, Positional Release, Trigger Point Therapy, and Rehabilitative Stretching Procedures.
